This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

Instant icon: Joe "the plumber" Wurzelbacher made headlines last fall when Republican presidential nominee John McCain brought him to light during a debate with Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. He spoke in Lansing Wednesday as part of the national Tea Bag Protest to protest taxes in the country

LANSING — Thousands of people descended on the state Capitol earlier today as part of a national movement of “tea parties” to protest high taxes and what they argue is an encroachment of socialism into American government and society.

Addressing the rally was Samuel Joesph Wurzelbacher, commonly known as “Joe the Plumber,” who became a household name during the 2008 presidential race when Republican presidential candidate John McCain referred to the Ohio resident as “Joe the Plumber,” and used him as a walking metaphor for the American middle class.

“I’m here for one reason and one reason only: It’s I love America,” Wurzelbacher told the crowd. “Mainstream media wants to paint us as a bunch of extremists, right? We’re in search of liberty and our freedoms. What’s so extreme about that?”

“I’m just regurgitating,” Wurzelbacher said. “I believe in common sense.”

Wurzelbacher went on to lambaste what he said was a rising tide of “socialism” across the country and laid the blame on the U.S. government.

“Let me give you another extremist view, ‘In God We Trust,’” he said to wild applause. “Say that too loud in some parts of America and you will be shot. It’s terrible.”

Hoisting signs with slogans like “Hitler gave good speeches too,” “I am only 4 and I am in debt,” and “Revolution or death,” the crowd filled the lawn of the Capitol and listened to other speakers like Scott Hagerstrom of Americans for Prosperity of Michigan; Leon Drolet of the Michigan Taxpayers’ Alliance; and Wendy Day of the Howell school board.

“Take out your cell phones, we’re going to make a call,” Drolet told the crowd. “I’m going to give you a phone number, then we are all going to hit send at the same time.”

Drolet had the crowd call the congressional switchboard, which he said would be flooded by the calls. Then he had the crowd chant: “Are you crazy? Wasting Money? People are suffering? Cut your spending!” Hundreds of cell phones were in the air.

“Let this be just the beginning of a movement. Today they heard us, but we need them to feel us,” Drolet said. “And they feel us when you make a difference in the field of the political arena. When some of the politicians lose their jobs. A recession is when your neighbor losses their job. A depression is when you lose your job and a recovery is when a politician loses their job.”

Former State Rep. Jack Hoogendyk (R-Texas Corners) listens intently to speakers on the steps of the Capitol.

Where to begin…. I guess I'll keep it simple. Do these people not understand that the 38% taxation level does not kick in until one has earned a pretty astonishing amount of income? I would rather be a literate, intelligent Progressive supporting taxation of the obscenely wealthy in a country where children are starving and receiving inadequate medical care, than someone who would cheer a man who says he is “just regurgitating.”

“Hitler Gave Speeches Good Speeches Too”

Joe The Not A Plumber–despite throwing up– gave a good speech.

By Joe's well-honed logic, Joe is Hitler.

      • Socko

So in what way is Joe the Plumber like Hitler. I am not a big fan of Joe I just want to know why you would say that.

        • rlpincus

Socko, one of the teabaggers signs–”Hitler Gave Good Speeches Too”–inferred that our President is like Hitler because both gave good speeches. Such a ridiculous statement would mean anyone who gave good speeches is like Hitler, hence a Nazi. Using the teabagger logic, I said Joe the Not A Plumber is Hitler, a Nazi.

Is Joe really a fascist? Of course not. Is Obama? Of course not. But if far-right thinkers can use such logic to argue the point, I thought they might like to see where their logic leads.

When you have opposing views each side is going to have people that go too
far. It is my view that spending is getting out of hand. Did I feel the
same way when President Bush signed the bail out for the banks? Yes I did! I
find it funny that Democrats bring up the Bush bail out package like it
was a mistake that Bush made.At the time the Democrats were firmly behind it
and so was Candidate Obama. As I recall Pelosi and Reed wanted President
Bush to rally more Republicans to support it. I did not support this or any
bill that promotes waste spending. The no ear mark President has not kept
his word on that. To say well Bush did that too is a admission of guilt. All
that is saying is because Bush did something wrong I have the right to do
it too. They both are wrong and the spending has to stop! That's what the
tea party was all about. Its not a left or right thing but an American thing
and the path that America is on.

I'm really not interested in Fox's talking points. It was one sign of many that made no sense. And cheering Joe The Not A Plumber's insistence that there are places in America where saying “In God We Trust” can get you killed shows how that illogic cuts to the core of the teabag “movement”.

What you don”t seem to understand is that if they keep spending 5x what we are sending in, don't you think they are going to ask for more. it may start at $200,000 but it will continue down to the little guys pretty fast because the big money will just take it elsewhere and leave us with the bill. it's time the government understands we are tired of their out of balance budgets, we leave within our means or we pay penalties, the government seems to just ask us for more money. lee j

      • imagineannie

Lee, if government spending and unbalanced budgets are your concern, you should look seriously at the record of George W. Bush who was a) a Republican and b) increased the deficit astronomically with no real plan about how the money would be recouped. You can hate government spending, but you cannot honestly blame our current situation on the administration that got elected into this disaster.

  • BobinSD

These people here are nothing but bigots and they haven't a clue what their protesting. It doesn't look like these people make over 250,000 a year. I bet you the majority had their taxes cut already. They are pissed off that they lost the election and all this is nothing but wacko white people republicans trying to get attention. Just read their signs. Faux News who promoted this along with Ginrich, Armey and others keep saying this is non partisan. If is was non partisan, there would be anti-Bush signs as well since he started it all. What a bunch of idiots!

    • Socko

I disagree I was there and Obama winning the election had nothing to do with me being there. I was not happy with some of the things Bush did and would have protested him if he was still in office. His stimulus package came out to late for us to make an objection! I also would refrain from calling people idiots when you don't know them nor would I presume I know why they are there!

  • sheribe

We were at the capitol today, and it was a peaceful demonstration of hard working americans. The average income tax for anyone who works is 33.3% in Michigan. We have been the hardest hit in this recession! The new stimulus package has some good ideas , but as with any of the stimulus packages, it contains tons of pork and earmarks. We depend on our government,…..no matter whos in office….. to spend it wisely. They are NOT! They dont care if your republican, democrat, libertarian, black , white, red or yellow,…..they will spend your money! There were all walks of people there, not just conservatives…….not just democrats…..but people who are suffering and who have no more to give. Just look at your paychecks…….look at the gross income …..then look at the take home pay. If anyone says thats o.k. then they're lying. Then when you spend your take home pay ……..your taxed again! Sales tax, gas tax, property tax, excise tax, death tax, etc. etc. They wont be happy till they have it all ……Thats where Socialism comes in. Americans Unite and take back our United States of America. United We Stand!!!
