Democratic gay caucus plans lobby day for anti-bullying legislation

By Todd A. Heywood | 04.14.09 | 12:12 am

The LGBT and Ally Caucus of the Michigan Democratic Party is not waiting around for the Safe Schools Coalition to reschedule a planned lobby day in support of anti-bullying legislation. According to a Facebook event, the group plans a lobbying day May 13.

This alternative lobby day event comes as the Caucus and other gay rights groups have been battling over what anti-bullying legislation should look like. On the one side is the Caucus which argues such legislation should contain enumeration– legal jargon for a list of protected classes– while Safe Schools Coalition and Triangle Foundation, a Detroit based LGBT rights group, have argued for support for a compromise bill.

For more Michigan Messenger coverage on the continuing debate over anti-bullying legislation visit here, here, here and here.

A lobby day was originally scheduled by the Coalition on March 25. But the action was canceled.

The May 13 event will include a briefing by State Sen. Glenn Anderson (D-Westland) and Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer will train participants on how to lobby their elected officials.

Citizens Lobby Against Bullying in Michigan School

A coalition of Michigan organizations is banding together to lobby for the passage of anti-bullying legislation. They plan to hold an All American Lobby Day on May 13 to support Senate Bill 0159.

“It is time to put an end to this violence in our schools so all our children can be safe,” said Phil Volk, one of the lead organizers. Volk heads two caucuses of the Michigan Democratic Party and serves on its Central Committee.

Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer will train participants on how to lobby that morning. The training begins at 9 am at Teamsters Hall (local 580), located at 5800 Executive Drive, Lansing .

SB 0159, sponsored by Sen Glenn Anderson of Wayne County, will to protect all Michigan youth from bullying and make our schools safe. The bill specifies that all minorities, including religious and racial minorities and youth with disabilities are protected.

Sponsoring and endorsing organizations, including Project Light, National HRC, White House LGBT Task Force, Michigan Equality, UofM College Democratic, Michigan Democratic Youth Caucus, American Family Committee, Order of St John the Beloved (Catholic Order) and many more, urge citizens to make appointments with their legislators that day, urging them to vote for the bill and sponsor a version of it in the House.

“My own son was bullied in school, so my heart really aches for these kids who are getting hurt,” Volk said. “The purpose of going to school is to get an education, but kids can’t learn if they fear for their safety.”

The lobby day will include a press conference at noon in the Capitol (room to be announced).
