Lessenberry urges Granholm to resign

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 04.13.09 | 11:41 am

granholm_cherryLongtime political reporter Jack Lessenbery says Lt. Gov. John Cherry will likely lose the 2010 governor’s race to Attorney General Mike Cox unless Granholm steps away from the governorship soon.

Writing in the Detroit Metro Times, Lessenberry says that Granholm has accomplished nothing as governor and that she is “fundamentally unsuited to govern.”

According to Lessenberry Granholm squandered her political capital by failing to lead after beating Amway guy Dick DeVos by a landslide in 2006, has failed to consider reasonable proposals for cutting the budget deficit, and has backed away from her plan to save money by combining state departments.

… Granholm muffed the whole budget mess two years ago; she provided no, or contradictory, leadership, and exasperated her own party. We ended up with a business tax calculated to drive commerce away, and a second-rate Oakland County politician, state Sen. Mike Bishop, whom she allowed to emerge as her effective equal.

Unless the Obama administration creates a graceful exit for Granholm by appointing her to some federal position Republicans will get the governor’s office, he predicts.

Lieutenant governors lose, period, especially one that serves under a governor who is a failure.
