New website and video promote stem cell referendum

By Ed Brayton | 07.29.08 | 10:50 am

The organization that gathered signatures to get a referendum to completely legalize embryonic stem cell research in Michigan on the ballot has launched a new website and a Youtube video to promote the referendum. The website, at curemichigan.com, contains background information, opportunities to get involved, news and the full text of the November ballot measure.

Under a state law passed in the 1997/1988 legislative session, it is illegal for any researcher in the state of Michigan to do any research on stem cells that would cause any harm to the blastocyst (a fertilized egg in the first few days when it is a tiny clump of cells). Researchers can use stem cell lines derived and cloned from embryos that were already destroyed prior to that law being passed. Researchers uniformly say that this restriction needlessly inhibits their work by reducing the variety of stem cell lines available for use.

The video features former Republican Congressman Joe Schwarz, a physician and strong supporter of stem cell research, and Democratic state Sen. Gretchen Whitmer.
