How McCain handles tough questions

Trying to steer the Straight Talk Express through Michigan

I’ve been frequenting a lot of political events over the past few months, and I’ve learned a thing or two, to say the least.

In fact I think I’ve been to enough now that I’ve learned that there are certain cues the speaker gives to let you know it’s time to “make some nooiiise” [kinda like those annoying signs at sporting events, but more subtle].

Here’s what to look for:

  • The speaker raises his/her voice.
  • Starts listing stuff (becoming more passionate as the list goes on).
  • Makes a bold, witty statement and humbly pauses to trigger applause.

But it seemed as if the folks at the General Motors Corp. Technical Center on Friday weren’t reading their political cue cards. Whenever Sen. John McCain would try any of the above tactics to get the crowd to cheer, clap

Yikes I am not a republican, so i generally do not spend a lot of time really listening to John McCain.  This year, however, I have done my reasearch so that I can articulate his positions if need be,and I have tried to get a sense of what he really would be like as president since he is a real contender this time. I remember a time when I liked McCain. He seemed independent in his thinking. I thought of all republicans, he was not so terrible.  But that was before I started paying closer attention. As these video clips show, Mccain is completely out of touch with reality. Sometimes, i wonder if maybe he doesn’t have some kind of PTSD. Talking about “evil” in such simplified terms is idiotic. It’s what got us into this stil conflict in Iraq. Even if you only watch the major outlets, you can still get a sense that the situation in the middle east is complex, nuanced, and not about clear cut good and evil. If we had only had a leader who was aware of this going into the “war”, we might have at least been more prepared for the reality on the ground instead of thinking we weouldb e greeting with garlands of flowers.
A statement like “they like to cut off people’s heads” is an overgeneralization that is offensive and unhelpful to getting any closer to the truth of the situation. I mean, couldn’t “they”  say similar things about us? Perhaps “They like to kill civilians” or “They like to torture people.”  McCain sounds irrational and careless. And, quite frankly,  a little crazy.  He sounds a lot like George W. Bush.  Yikes.

Scare tactics Yeah talking about evil and graphic details of blowing up women and beheading paints this savage picture of Iranian’s. He was talking about the islamic extremists but he really didn’t work to hard at making the distinction between crazy “evil” extremists and regular citizens.
