McCain in Warren at GM Tech Center this morning

By Matthew DeLong | 07.18.08 | 9:36 am

DETROIT — Sen. John McCain is back in the Motor City today, for his second visit in as many weeks. Today, the Arizona senator is scheduled to visit the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Mich, where he plans to tour the Chevrolet Volt design room. The Volt, GM’s forthcoming foray into the electric car market, is expected to be on the market by 2010. After the tour, the presumptive Republican nominee is scheduled to host a town hall meeting — where he will almost certainly promote his plan to achieve “strategic independence” from foreign oil.

Continued -McCain held a town hall meeting here last week, which had a few auto workers in attendance. He received a lukewarm welcome — if it had been nighttime you probably would have heard the crickets as his jokes, which normally get some chuckles from friendly audiences, fell flat. This is blue-collar, pro-union, anti-NAFTA territory. GM in particular has seen waves of layoffs in recent years, with more expected on the horizon. Many people here, and in other Rust Belt states that have faced manufacturing-sector job losses to outsourcing — blame free trade agreements for the losses.  McCain has been an enthusiastic and unapologetic supporter of free trade on the campaign trail. However, this also gives McCain the opportunity to promote his plan for re-educating and retraining displaced workers.

The Associated Press reports today’s event will be invite-only — which could mean today’s audience may be a bit warmer than last week’s. We’ll find out when the crowd gets a chance to ask some questions of the candidate following McCain’s address.

Matthew DeLong of sister site The Washington Independent is traveling with the McCain campaign and filed this report.
