A bridge to opportunity or a bridge to nowhere?
Regarding a possible second bridge crossing across the Detroit River between Windsor and Detroit, it depends on which Detroit mayoral candidate you ask.
Businessman Dave Bing is supportive of the plan to add a second span to expand the privately owned Ambassador Bridge, saying such a project would lead to significant job creation both direct and indirect. Bing, chairman and founder of the Bing Group, a steel manufacturer and automotive supplier, said during a Tuesday morning gathering of the Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, that such a project would create 3,000 jobs, The Associated Press reports.
Interim Mayor Kenneth Cockrel Jr, Bing’s opponent in the May 5 runoff election to complete the second term of ex-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, is not a fan of the plan, saying that such a project has the potential to create myriad environmental problems as well as worsen traffic conditions on Detroit’s freeways and surface streets that lead to the Ambassador Bridge.
The U.S. Department of Transportation in January issued the required environmental approvals for a second bridge downriver of the Ambassador Bridge near Zug Island. The controversial project, which would provide a direct link between I-75 and Ontario’s Highway 401, would cost $1.5 billion.
Plans for adding a second span to the Ambassador Bridge took a leap forward earlier this month when the Michigan Strategic Fund approved up to $787 million in private activity bonds for the $1 billion project.
