Majority supports smoking ban

By Justin Miller | 03.30.09 | 11:11 am

A big majority of voters support a smoking ban in all workplaces, including casinos, according to a new poll released Monday.

The EPIC-MRA poll, commissioned by Campaign for Smokefree Air, said 64 percent they support a smoking ban. The issue has been bandied about inside the legislature for months and is scheduled to have a committee vote in Lansing on Wednesday.

One hang up over a smoking ban has been whether Detroit’s casinos would be given an exception. The casinos fear business would be driven to Indian-owned casinos. Casinos, restaurants and bars in Windsor, Ontario, do not allow smoking.

Most of the people of “smoke free air” are probably too young to ask bar patrons. After over a year of experience here in Chicago, now that the fanfare has worn off and the lobbyists have moved on to other states, it's clearly obvious that trying to ban smoking in small neighborhood “shot and beer” bars is pretty useless. Many small bars in my area ignore the ban to keep their customers, neighbors, and local police (many are patrons when off duty) satisfied. In areas where real crime is an issue, the problem of undesirables being attracted by groups of people outside the bars and causing disturbances on the PUBLIC street, property that the owner has no control over, far outweighs the issue of people peacefully smoking inside a bar, bothering absolutly no one, All of the complaints are from neighbors of bars that comply. It's fading into history in many small neighborhood bars. The only places it becomes an issue seems to be in rural areas where local police have little to do except visit local bars and monitor their parking lots.

Our Smoke Free Law here in Illinois is working very well and the vast majority of citizens, including most smokers, strongly favor the Law which went into effect 1-1-08. Most bars and all restaurants fully comply with Law. In fact, many bar owners were happy to have this Smoke Free Law because they desired to have their Business go smoke free before but needed a level playing field. Do not listen to any person or Organization that tells you that Michigan does not also deserve clean indoor air free from secondhand tobacco smoke. They are usually rabid pro- smokers, uninformed, or worse; have ties to the Tobacco Industry. In reality, few people with common sense oppose Smoking Bans.

It isn't just secondhand smoke we need to worry about, third-hand smoke is pretty dangerous too! There's a whole lot of junk in cigarette residue that gets everywhere, even your hair and jackets! If anyone's interested in that they can read about it here:

Even if they just set up smoking -only rooms, it's very hard to contain the cigarette residue that people get onto their clothes and hair. A smoking ban in workplaces is a great idea for the promotion of public health and safety.

While a smoking ban in casinos may drive away smoking customers, it may attract more non-smoking customers, and because the latter does not smoke, they're likely to live longer, have more money leftover (from not buying cigarettes) and be able to frequent the casino more than the smokers. So is it really a loss?

We all should support smoking ban. Smoking is injurious to health. It causes a lot of problems. Even passive smokers are at a risk. So this evil habit should be completely made away from our lives.

I have allergy to smoke. So can’t even tolerate smoke far from me. So I am in total favour of no smoking. It should be banned from everywhere.

Yea, this is the trend towards where things are going. To answer some previous comments that ask why smoking is not just banned, I think the answer might be tax dollars. Smokers financially support many helpful and beneficial programs.

I dont agree with you they smokers support lot of financial program but destroy their health as well. Smoking is not been banned because of amount of tax generated by government through them.
