Detroit mayoral race: Bing goes 2-to-1 over Cockrel in TV spending

By Justin Miller | 03.27.09 | 2:14 pm

Detroit mayoral candidate Dave Bing has spent nearly twice as much on television advertisements than interim Mayor Kenneth Cockrel Jr. in the race to fill the remainder of ex-mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s term.

Bing spent about $350,000 on broadcast TV according to the latest campaign finance report. This is more than the $195,000 spent by Cockrel on TV during the same period.

As of March 16, Bing had $34,430 in cash on hand to Cockrel’s $1,344. Five weeks remain until the May 5 special election.

The Detroit Free Press notes eye-popping contributions to the campaigns of both candidates. The wife of Michigan GOP chairman Ron Weisler donated $3,400 to Bing. Mayer Morganroth, the defense attorney for Kilpatrick’s former chief of staff, Christine Beatty, gave $1,500 to Cockrel.
