Bing grabs firefighters’ endorsement

By Justin Miller | 03.25.09 | 11:03 am

The Detroit Firefighters Association endorsed Dave Bing for mayor Wednesday.

The group represents all of the city’s 1,100 firefighting personnel and said it endorsed Bing, according to the Free Press, because the association is unhappy with interim Mayor Kenneth Cockrel Jr.’s treatment of firefighters. The main sticking point is the city’s insistence that seniority be on the table during contract negotiations with the union.

The endorsement for Bing comes after a slew of union endorsements for Cockrel. Last week, the United Auto Workers (AUW) endorsed him and the Detroit Police Officers Association gave its backing to Cockrel previously.

So far, AFSCME Council 25, representing all Detroit city workers, hasn’t made an endorsement.
