Ann Arbor News dying; AnnArbor.com to rise from ashes

By Justin Miller | 03.23.09 | 9:59 am

After 174 years the Ann Arbor News will cease printing regularly and become a mostly web publication in July, it’s publisher announced Monday morning. Replacing it will be AnnArbor.com and print papers on Thursday and Sunday.

The Ann Arbor News’ plight is hardly singular in the area. News of its impending closure comes days before the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News quit daily home delivery at the end of March and several weeks after the Oakland Press’ publishing company filed for bankruptcy.

Even the University of Michigan’s student-run newspaper, The Michigan Daily, expects to be in the red by June.

UPDATE: Three more Michigan newspapers announced today steep cuts in their print editions. The Bay City Times, Saginaw News and Flint Journal will publish local editions on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The Web news from all three papers will be fed to readers through MLive.com.
