A new poll shows U.S. Rep. Peter Hoekstra of Holland appearing to catch up to Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson in the 2010 Republican primary race for governor.
Hoesktra and Patterson have 20 percent support from likely Republican voters, according to a survey commissioned by the Marketing Resource Group. Hoekstra’s support is up 3 percent from a poll released last week.
Attorney General Mike Cox has 16 percent support and Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land has 12 percent.
The poll said Hoekstra is drawing on strong support from West Michigan Republicans, 47 percent of whom said they support their native son. Conversely, Patterson is drawing strongly on metropolitan Detroit support. The results show that a “out-state” vs. metro-Detroit contest is shaping up for the nomination between the two men, with Cox and Land close behind.
These four Republicans have all either formed exploratory committees or said they’re considering campaigns. Hoekstra said he will decide whether to run for governor at the end of the month and Patterson said he would do the same around Easter.
The GOP may also get two candidates from the private sector.
Ann Arbor venture capitalist and businessman Rick Snyder said Thursday he would consider a run.
Looming over the Republican field is a possible run by Dominos CEO and former University of Michigan regent (and football player) David Brandon. Brandon is rumored to be mulling a run after briefly considering it in 2006 and chairing Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos’ campaign that year. Brandon could shake up the Republican field by largely self-funding his campaign.
