Detroit mayoral candidate David Bing made false statements about his college education, according to an article in the Detroit Free Press Wednesday morning.
The Free Press reported that Bing does not have master’s degree in business administration as he claims, nor did he get his bachelor’s degree in four years. A call to the school showed that it took Bing 29 years to complete his bachelor’s degree in economics from Syracuse University.
Bing commonly gives his graduation date as 1966 in his bio, but according to Syracuse, he didn’t graduate until he finished up coursework in 1995.
In an interview on the National Basketball Retired Players Association Web site, Bing is less than accurate about holding an MBA and exaggerates about his undergrad time.
Bing states in that interview:
“I got an MBA from the General Motors Institute after I got into business, quite frankly. My degree at Syracuse was economics and a minor in marketing. I was one of those guys that graduated in four years and with decent grades and I took it very seriously.”
But in an interview on WJR-AM News Talk Radio with Paul W. Smith this morning, Bing retracted his false claims about holding an MBA:
“I don’t have an MBA from General Motors Institute.”
Bing added that he didn’t see this as a “big issue.”
However, during an election even little flaps can cause big problems for candidates.
Bing’s dishonesty with voters while running for Detroit’s top office may be one of those problems. Detroit is a city scarred by lying politicians and political scandals and is struggling to recover from a former mayor’s dishonesty. Bing, whose campaign major platform is “change” needs to show the people that is is indeed a departure from deception-as-usual Detroit politics.
When Bing said he graduated in four years, he knew he didn’t have his degree because he took additional classes to graduate in 1995. When he said he had an MBA he knew that he didn’t.
It’s not his education that is in question; it’s the fact that he misled the public to bolster his own image.
