Granholm touts Sebelius for HHS, links job losses to health care

By LoRayne Apo-Joynt | 03.03.09 | 8:40 pm

On Monday evening Gov. Jennifer Granholm appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball as a proponent of Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

Sebelius was nominated earlier in the day as Secretary of Human Health and Services by President Barack Obama. Sebelius brings experience as Kansas’ insurance commissioner and degrees in public administration to the table, attributes which should be useful in health care reform efforts expected during this administration.  She also brings a history of support for women’s reproductive rights which is sure to rile abortion opponents during confirmation hearings.

Granholm also used the opportunity to stress the relevance of health care to Michigan’s auto industry; with health care costs running $1200 to $1500 per car made in Michigan, auto makers were moving production to other countries to reduce their manufacturing expenses.  She pointed out that more cars were made in the province of Ontario last year than in Michigan, attributing the reason to health care expenses; Canada has a single-payer national health care system as opposed to the employer-paid health care common among Michigan’s auto businesses.

Bet we’ll be hearing more from Gov. Granholm on this topic in front of committees in Washington should Gov. Sebelius be confirmed as head of HHS.
