Former Vice President Al Gore will endorse Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama tonight in Detroit, according to CBS News and documents released by the campaign.
“A few hours from now I will step on stage in Detroit, Michigan to announce my support for Senator Barack Obama,” the former 2000 Democratic nominee for president wrote in a letter to Obama supporters. “From now through Election Day, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected President of the United States.”
“Over the next four years, we are going to face many difficult challenges — including bringing our troops home from Iraq, fixing our economy, and solving the climate crisis,” Gore continued. “Barack Obama is clearly the candidate best able to solve these problems and bring change to America.”
“I’ve never asked members of AlGore.com to contribute to a political campaign before, but this moment and this election are too important to let pass without taking action,” he said. Gore is a Nobel Prize and Oscar winner, a former senator from Tennessee and an outspoken supporter of strong measures to deal with climate change. Gore did not endorse a candidate in the Democratic presidential primaries this year.
Michigan Messenger reporters Minehaha Forman and Alexa Stanard will be reporting live from Joe Louis Arena in downtown Detroit tonight.
