State AG Cox intervenes to stop utility rate increases

Michigan’s Attorney General Mike Cox announced on Monday that his office will intervene and try to prevent requests for rate increases by three utility companies from being passed by the Michigan Public Service Commission. The four requests by three companies — Detroit Edison, Consumers Energy and Michigan Consolidated Gas Company — are seeking to increase utility rates on four million Michigan residents by about $658 million. All such requests must be granted by the state government before being allowed.

    Doesn't it strike you as odd that Cox has a problem with Granholm's executive order asking for more review of plans for new coal-fired plants, but he doesn't allow the free market to discourage consumption by increasing rates?

    I object to the $3.48 monthly charge that is going to be put on my DTE bill to pay for bills not paid by other people. If this happens, I want a receipt showing it as a donation.
