Lansing man arrested at City Council meeting

For the second time in a month, a citizen has stormed the Lansing City Council. On Monday night, Lansing resident Barry Shiffer, 42, addressed the council then charged through a gate dividing the audience from the council.

In his comments to the council about a drug raid arrest of a friend’s home, Shiffer told the council members, “I will return with my AK-47 and do business with you.” He then charged the well surrounding the dais on which the Lansing City Council is seated during meetings.

The Lansing police officer stationed in the chamber approached Shiffer in an attempt to remove him. Part of the exchange was broadcast live on the city’s cable station, but council members directed the feed be shut off. To see the video, visit WILX, the NBC affiliate in Lansing.

Shiffer has been arraigned on two counts of assaulting a police officer, one count of disorderly conduct in public and one count of resisting arrest. His bond was set at $50,000 and he is currently lodged in the Ingham County Jail.

Michigan Messenger reported on a Jan. 5 incident at City Council when a man wielding a Bible threaten to smite Lansing Mayor Virgil Bernero. That man was not arrested.
