Unconventional Michigan plans to shut down RNC

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 05.27.08 | 10:23 pm

Unconventional Michigan is organizing a June 14 Lansing teach-in for those interested in protesting the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul Sept. 1-4.

“We believe that disrupting the convention offers a unique opportunity to take our opposition to the war, ecological destruction and other institutional forms of oppression to the next level,” the group writes, “We remember the excitement that permeated the movement post-Seattle and believe that the conventions this summer could offer a similar opportunity. Moreover, we believe that talking about direct action and the political conventions could increase interest in and facilitate participation in existing radical projects across Michigan while also inspiring new projects.”

More information about the workshop is here, and more on why people are mobilizing against the convention here.

Disrupting Republican Convention? Peaceful demonstrations are one thing. Ethical conduct  IS IMPORTANT !

Setting a goal of disrupting is CRASS.

Civility can breed interest, just plain disruption as a goal is not worthy of a civilized society.

Go and demonstrate, fine. But keep it resonable, use good people, good signs, friendliness to the onlookers.

generate sympathy or at least some empathy, but don’t make a mockery of freedom of speech by getting all wound up with police riot control and people locked to a fence, etc.
