Grand Rapids Police say they are ready for influx of thousands

Grand Rapids Police spokesman Ralph Mason told Michigan Messenger that his department is ready to handle the estimated crowds of over 12,000 people expected to flood downtown Grand Rapids this afternoon for the appearance of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

“There is going to be some congestion,” Mason said. “We have extra officers on to help with traffic. A lot of this you plan it and plan it and then you have to adjust as it happens.”

The police official encouraged those who work in downtown Grand Rapids and do not wish to be caught up in congestion to leave about 2 p.m.

Mason said the arena holds an estimated “12,700 plus” and the arena officials have set up sound systems outside the arena for those who cannot get in to hear the senator speak.

College Republicans from Grand Valley State University have announced plans to protest today, and Mason said they will be giving the opportunity to do so — most likely in a protest area.

“So long as they don’t do some silliness, you know get overboard and do things that are illegal, we are going to let them do their thing,” Mason said. “We’re not opposed to be taking them to jail. They get out of line and we will be carting them to the county jail.”
