Obama Wins More Labor Support After Bonior Nod

By Todd Spencer | 05.09.08 | 12:41 pm

On Thursday, David Bonior, former Michigan representative and erstwhile John Edwards campaign manager, gave Barack Obama a perceived boost with organized labor by endorsing the Illinois senator over Hillary Clinton.

The day after Bonior made his announcement, union president and superdelegate John Gage of the American Federation of Government Employees union (AFGE) announced his support for Obama.

It was a double shot of good news for the Obama camp because they not only picked up Gage as a superdelegate vote, but also the official endorsement of his union, which represents 600,000 federal employees.

Two other superdelegates also endorsed Obama today: U.S. Rep. Donald Payne of New Jersey, a former Clinton supporter, and U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio of Oregon, who pledged to campaign with Obama at stops in the state for the upcoming contest there.

If Bonior’s endorsement continues to line up labor unions behind Obama, will that hasten the end to Hillary’s now-longshot bid? And how will Obama do in Michigan with rank-and-file labor come November? Stay tuned.
