Guv’s office responds to Wayne County sheriff’s request for state of emergency declaration

By Todd A. Heywood | 01.23.09 | 6:00 pm

As reported by Michigan Messenger earlier today, Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans has asked Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm to declare a state of emergency in Wayne County and issue a moratorium on home foreclosures.

But Granholm spokeswoman Liz Boyd says it is not going to happen.

“The governor does not have the legal authority to declare a moratorium,” Boyd said in a phone interview. “The governor is concerned about the foreclosure crisis and continues to call for the passage of the Home Foreclosure Prevention Act.

“We know how serious this is. The foreclosure problem is a crisis that has been well-documented,” Boyd said.

Asked if the governor would declare a state of emergency as requested by Sheriff Evans, Boyd said, “I don’t know how much more clear I can be other than saying the governor does not have the authority to declare a moratorium.”
