Benton Harbor extends comment deadline on lakefront lease plan

The public comment period for a controversial, publicly financed luxury golf development in Benton Harbor has been extended by two weeks — until May 17 — by the City Commission.

Benton Harbor is in the midst of a federally mandated public review of a lease proposal that would give developers control of a portion of the city’s lakefront park for a century. At a packed public hearing April 17, citizens complained that the proposal had not been made widely available and asked for more time to read and understand the document.

The public comment period extension “should be more than 14 days,” said City Commissioner Juanita Henry. “The document  is unbelievably technical.”

Last week Henry asked that the city request a business plan, feasibility and performance study and performance bond from Harbor Shores developers before agreeing to lease the city park. The commission turned down the idea.
