New report claims secret transcript shows Mormon church spent more on Prop. 8

By Todd A. Heywood | 01.16.09 | 8:41 am

A new report by the American News Project is likely to raise the heat on the Church of Latter Day Saints. The Church, whose members are commonly referred to as “Mormons”, is already under investigation by California election officials to find out if it violated California campaign finance law by failing to report expenses related to efforts to amend the state’s constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

ANP reports that it has uncovered transcripts of an hour-long satellite conference from church leaders in which political expenditures including internet campaigns, advertising and phone banks were promised.

The Mormon church has been the focus of protests since Proposition 8 passed 52 percent to 48 percent in Nov.  The ballot initiative modified California’s state constitution to limit the definition of marriage to that between a man and a woman, while eliminating the right of same-sex couples to marry.

I attended the satellite broadcast cited in this article. It was open to the public and repeatedly announced beforehand in LDS-Church meetings. The LDS leaders who spoke stated the Church's position and asked each person attending to ponder the issue, to pray about it, and then to act in accorcance with his/her beliefs. They explained that the Church was participating as part of a coalition (http://protectmarriage.com) and that the internet campaigns, advertising, and 'phone banks that this article mentioned would be coming FROM THE COALITION. They did NOT say that the Church would provide any of these.
    .
The Church did put up a website (http://www.preservingmarriage.org). From their filings, I presume that the costs for it were donated/borne by others.

Well, apparenty the Mormon Church had nothing to do with it! It seems it was the Church of Latter Day Saints, which by the way is NOT the Mormon Church. The “Mormon Church” is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
