Gannett looks to reduce AP news feed in cost-cutting move

By LoRayne Apo-Joynt | 01.14.09 | 10:30 pm

Our colleague Todd Heywood reported earlier that newspaper company Gannett (NYSE:GCI) was putting its workers on mandatory one-week furloughs during the next quarter to reduce costs.

Apparently that’s not enough cost-savings; according to Gannett Blog, the company has sent a memo within its organization at a midwest outlet outlining a pilot program in which paid Associated Press news feed content was replaced with USAToday content.  USAToday, published nationally, is owned by Gannett; the move if rolled out across all 80-plus Gannett papers is estimated at one million dollars in savings at each local paper.

There’s more to this situation brewing, including a possible shuffle of management at the top of USAToday.  Stay tuned.
