A must-read: The Courage of Detroit

By LoRayne Apo-Joynt | 01.12.09 | 12:16 pm

Before you say one more thing about the automotive industry bailout or American-made cars, you need to read this article by the Detroit Free Press’ Mitch Albom in this month’s Sports Illustrated: The Courage of Detroit.

Michigan blogger Marcy Wheeler is right, you need to read the whole thing even if it’s lengthy essay.

For those of you who’ve never lived in Michigan, understand that capital city Lansing may be our heart, Ann Arbor our brain, but Detroit is our soul. Bruised and battered, we may be losers at a lot of things, but we’re not going to lose the fighting spirit that’s seen Detroiters and their fellow Michiganders through other bust-and-boom cycles, like those that came and went with lumber and mining before the automotive industry.  We’ve been here before.

The Detroit Lions may have just wrapped up the worst season ever, with a record-breaking no wins and 16 losses, looking a lot like the automakers’ fortunes in this state. But Detroit’s Red Wings are 29-7-5 — that’s third in National Hockey League, only two wins behind the top slot. If we figure out how to make and export something that wins like the Red Wings, watch out.

We may yet break the curse on our state if Lions’ former head coach Marinelli can actually get a gig as assistant head coach for Chicago’s Bears; as Albom points out in his essay, no Lions head coach has ever gone on to become a head coach elsewhere in the NFL. Assistant head coach is pretty doggone good with that record.  And right now, we’d be happy with one of our Michigan automakers landing the title of second biggest automaker if it meant we had a fighting chance at improving our record making the cars of the future.
