Despite evidence of the impact of mercury on children and public health, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette last month joined with 24 other state attorneys general in filing a lawsuit to scuttle new EPA regulations that would reduce mercury emissions from power plants.

Dalai Lama to present awards to UM students

The Dalai Lama will present three University of Michigan students with Compassion in Action Awards Sunday at Crisler Arena.

The awards were created by Jewel Heart in honor of the Dalai Lama’s visit to UM. They recognize significant community service in the areas of poverty, environment and public health and carry a $5,000 prize. They will be presented at the Peter M. Wege Lecture on Sustainability.

Jewel Heart sought nominations from colleges and universities in Washtenaw County.  The awardees are:  Danielle Bober, Urban and Regional Planning, for work with Detroit Vacant Properties Campaign and Focus HOPE; Julie Maslowsky, Developmental Psychology, for work in Ecuador with the Quito Project developing community-based public health programs; and Arie Jongejan, Sustainable Systems in the School of Natural Resources and Ross School of Business, for work with Burmese refugees in Thailand developing solar and renewable energy.
