Consumer Reports moves up new car recommendations

By Ed Brayton | 01.07.09 | 8:00 am

Consumer Reports, seeking to help the Big Three automakers recover from the current downturn, has moved up the publication of its usual annual recommendations of the best new cars from April to February. Ford dominates the list of recommended vehicles, but GM garnered some praise as well:

Consumer Reports named the V-6 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ as its top-rated Detroit 3 vehicle and also selected the Cadillac DTS. The other six winners were Ford Motor cars: the Ford Fusion SEL and Mercury Milan Premier, Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable, and Lincoln MKZ and Ford Taurus X. No Chrysler vehicles were recommended…

Consumer Reports praised Ford and GM for improving performance, saying that almost all Ford vehicles rank average or better in reliability and that GM has several new models that score well — although it noted that half of GM’s models still rank below industry average in reliability.

The magazine recommended no Chrysler models, saying the model line “is very disappointing, with little promise on the horizon.”

The magazine particularly praised Ford for making their vehicles more reliable, saying that the Ford Fusion is “more reliable than the Toyota Camry.”
