Lansing mayor victim of attempted smiting

President George W. Bush may have gotten a pair of shoes thrown at him in Baghdad, but Lansing Mayor Virgil Bernero — fresh off a stint as a national media darling pushing for a bailout for the Big Three Automakers — was nearly smote at Monday night’s City Council meeting.

Chris Swope, the Lansing City Clerk, said the would-be zealot was John Boise, a Lansing resident.

According to accounts from Council members and the Mayor, Boise approached the public comment podium and began reading Biblical passages about “smiting” people. Then he allegedly entered the main Council chamber area, which is partitioned from the audience by a railing, while saying “I will take care of the mayor.”

He was stopped by a Lansing police officer stationed in the audience chamber and was escorted from the chambers. During that time, Boise allegedly asked the officer if he was a Christian and informed him that if he ejected Boise, he would suffer a heart attack before the end of the night.

Boise was not arrested, and Lansing Police report that no officers have suffered heart attacks.

After the incident, the mayor told Michigan Messenger, “I was waiting for the shoe to fly.”
