Granholm to replace Richardson in cabinet?

By Ed Brayton | 01.06.09 | 8:22 am

Now that New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson has withdrawn his name as nominee to be Secretary of Commerce in the Obama administration, attention has shifted to the possibility of Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm as a possible replacement.

Granholm was mentioned as a possible candidate for Energy or Labor secretary under President-elect Barack Obama. Neither job developed, but some say the Democratic governor could be a good fit for Commerce secretary.

Granholm has made seven overseas trade trips during her six years as governor and has been a vocal advocate of alternative energy and the domestic automakers.

For a while it seemed as though Granholm was being considered for half the positions in the cabinet, not to mention a leading candidate for a seat on the federal bench. The article notes that Granholm’s office issued a statement saying once again that she intends to remain as governor until her term is completed in 2010.
