The thumb of Michigan would be a great place for wind turbines.

Just to the east of the thumb, over in Canada, is the largest photo-voltaic power plant in the world.

I boggles my mind. If we build it they will come. If we build large scale renewable power plants; we will have cheap, and clean, energy to support industry.

Think of the jobs such power plants would create.

I will admit, initially building such power plants would not be cheap. Once build they will eventually pay for themselves, both monetarily, and otherwise.

We build the National Highway System. We have the Tennesse Valley Authority.

It's time for something similar with Renewable energy.

We'd do well to look at Scotland right now. They realize that coal is a dead end, and are forging ahead with wind based energy sources . The real, and continual power of our Great Lakes can accomplish this. There are all ready several wind 'machines' up on the Straits, and Iowa has quite a few-some of the parts are made here in Michigan, too. Turning to coal is an environmental nightmare, no matter which way it's looked at. Destruction of the mountains in West Virginia, and the toxic runoff from the holding ponds are just a partial example. I won't go into the long history of the brutalization of miners, their Families, etc. . fuck mr. peabody's coal train! Sliante! kc

You are digging beyond the glittery package, and it's important.
The governor's largest single eco-energy project - Mascoma, is similarly and dangerously flawed. If, and when it creates 40 million gallons of diesel fuel out of wood, it will require between 1400 and 1600 cords of wood daily. The USFS says that amount would take it's entire local annual allotment and use it in 180 days. Mascoma promises to de-nude the Upper Peninsula. And for that Michigan people will give over $26 million and another $25 in federal incentives. And burn fuel in the process.
Mascoma needs this kind of serious analysis you have done.
