New twists affect mayor scandal

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff, Christine Beatty, continue to be tangled in the ongoing text-messaging scandal that has resulted in twelve criminal counts against the two, including perjury, conspiracy, misconduct in office and obstruction of justice. Over the past couple days, new developments have emerged:

  • The electronic tethering order issued to prevent Beatty from leaving the state was reversed Tuesday

  • The police whistle-blower hearings began Tuesday morning in the Detroit City Council

  • Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy decided that the 36th District judges should be removed from the text-scandal hearings

  • The whistle-blower’s attorney Michael Stefani wrote a note to the City Council after the first hearing this morning, claiming that city lawyers kept information from the council.
