Kuipers may run for U.S. Congress

By Ed Brayton | 12.24.08 | 8:32 am

Michigan Liberal, quoting the MIRS news service, reports that state Sen. Wayne Kuipers has formed an exploratory committee for the possibility of running for the U.S. House of Representatives from the 2nd district of Michigan:

Sen. Wayne Kuipers (R-Holland) announced today he is forming an exploratory campaign committee for the 2nd Congressional District race in 2010, adding that he plans on making a final decision this coming spring.

Kuipers, the chair of the Senate Education and Judiciary committees, said he would be using the next few months to look at the pros and cons of running for Congress after having served in the state Legislature since 1998. He said he’s holding off on a formal announcement because of what he views as “Michigan voter fatigue.”

That seat is currently held by Rep. Peter Hoekstra, but he has announced that he will not seek reelection after the current term. Hoekstra is widely believed to be preparing for a gubernatorial run in 2010. The 2nd district includes most of the lakeshore of West Michigan from Holland to north of Ludington.
