FBI informant organized racist Kalamazoo rally, group says

By Todd A. Heywood | 03.27.08 | 1:48 pm

A rally of white supremacists in Kalamazoo last summer was organized and attended by a paid FBI informant, the Southern Poverty Law Center is reporting.

Hal Turner, a New Jersey-based internet radio host and avowed racist who has called for the murder of federal judges, held a rally against what he called black crime in Kalamazoo on Aug. 4, 2007. During that rally, Turner called for the “lynching” of blacks.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, in a report on its blog, said it has confirmed that Turner was a paid informant for the FBI Field Office in Newark, N.J., for “years.”

Turner’s rally drew about 60 white supremacy supporters, sporting swastikas and Confederate flag motifs on their clothing. The rally cost the city of Kalamazoo more than $80,000 for police protection and tied up more than 400 officers from several police agencies.

The National Press Office of the FBI declined comment on the report, directing questions to Sean Quinn of the Newark Field Office. Those calls had not been returned as of early Thursday afternoon.
