LANSING — Hundreds of educators, students and supporters will descend on the Capitol this morning seeking passage of anti-bullying bills. The bills are collectively called Matt’s Safe School Law and are named for Matt Epling, an East Lansing teenager who committed suicide after being bullied.
Supporters of the bill want it to list protected classes of students; opponents say that is not necessary. State Sen. Wayne Kuipers, the chair of the Senate Education Committee, has thus far refused to schedule a hearing for the bills — which passed the state house last year — but told Michigan Messenger he would be introducing substitute bills after the Senate returns from spring break in two weeks.
The American Family Association of Michigan has issued an action alert claiming the bill is a “Trojan Horse.”
“Homosexual activists hope to use legitimate concern about student safety as a subterfuge to sneak special rights based on ‘sexual orientation’ and ‘gender identity and expression’ into law for the first time, then use that as precedent for inserting special protection for such behavior into Michigan’s ‘hate crime’ and ‘civil rights’ laws. And as it has in other countries and cities that have already created special status based on homosexual behavior, that will pose a direct threat to your religious freedom and free speech rights.”
The alert asks supporters to send emails to their senators and to Sen. Kuipers asking him not to schedule hearings on the bills at all.
