Despite evidence of the impact of mercury on children and public health, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette last month joined with 24 other state attorneys general in filing a lawsuit to scuttle new EPA regulations that would reduce mercury emissions from power plants.

Obama names Sutley to Council on Environmental Quality

President-elect Barack Obama has named Nancy Sutley to run the Council on Environmental Quality for his administration. Sutley will come to the post from Los Angeles where she currently is serving as deputy mayor.

The CEQ is responsible for coordinating national environmental policy with administration agencies and the White House.

Sutley identifies as a Latina; her mother is from Argentina. She is the first openly gay nominee for a top spot in the Obama administration, and served on Hillary Clinton’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender steering committee. She’s worked for Carol Browner, who headed the Environmental Protection Agency under President Bill Clinton, and has also served in several other environmental policy positions in California.
